Reading The Poetry of Sex
by Sophie Hannah
“A raucous, highly enjoyable anthology by acclaimed poet Sophie Hannah.
It’s hard to imagine a more fruitful subject for poets than sex, in all its glorious manifestations: from desire and hope, through disappointment and confusion, to conclusion and consequence. And little has changed over the centuries, as Sophie Hannah’s anthology vividly demonstrates, from Catullus pleading with Lesbos to Walt Whitman singing the body electric. Moods and attitudes may vary but the drive persists as does the desire to write about it. ”

February 2014: TAMPA by Alissa Nutting
Published last year, this is definitely a book to really get the EBC started again! Filled with filthy prose and a subject matter that is sure to spark debate, TAMPA “is a grand, uncompromising, seriocomic examination of want and a scorching literary debut.”

The Erotic Book Club 3rd Birthday: Confessional / Thursday 26 April 2012, 8pm
Each year on our anniversary we turn the tables and set our readers a writing challenge. This year we’re asking you to anonymously submit a short confessional story to be read out at the April Book Club.
We’ve set up a special page on our site for you to submit your piece without letting us know who you are, so no need for red faces. Stories should be no more than 1500 words.

The Erotic Book Club: Guillaume Apollinaire’s “Les Onze Mille Verges” (The Eleven Thousand Rods)
Thursday 29th March 2012, 8pm
Guillaume Apollinaire’s “Les Onze Mille Verges” (The Eleven Thousand Rods)
One of the most masterful and hilarious erotic novels of all time, pronounced by Picasso to be Apollinaire’s masterpiece. Debauched aristocrat Mony Vibescu and a circle of his fellow sybarites blaze a trail
of uncontrollable lust, bloody cruelty and depravity across the streets of Europe in Apollinaire’s classic erotic novel. Written in 1906 after Apollinaire’s researches at the Enfer section of the Bibliotheque
Nationale in which he encountered the suppressed works of De Sade, Restif de la Bretonne and Andrea de Nerciat, The Eleven Thousand Rods is a startling modern response to these “”old masters”” of erotica.
Length: 128 pages

The Erotic Bookclub 2011
Hello Pervs!
Our next Erotic Book Club will be taking place on Thursday January 27th 2011.
The club takes a break over winter with no club in December. Given that this gives us a little more time to prepare we decided we would pick a theme so that we could delve a bit deeper and have various texts to compare against each other:
We will be focusing on Erotic Female Memoirs reading both The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl by Belle de Jour and The Sexual Life of Catherine M by Catherine Millet and comparing the styles of these ‘sexually explicit’ confessionals by women.
Join us on 27th January for our next club and let us know if the books tickled your fancy…

The Erotic Bookclub
This month’s book

Emmanuelle – Emmanuelle Arsan
The votes are in and our book club members have decided that this month we’re all going to be reading the book which spawned the most famous erotic movie of all time.
“Written by the wife of a diplomat in the French Foreign Service, it takes the form of an autobiographical novel, which it may or may not be. As the story opens, Emmanuelle is boarding a plane in London to rejoin her husband in Bangkok. She finds herself powerfully compelled by the overnight passenger seated beside her, and before she has landed, her irrepressible sensual nature has begun to open wide vistas of sexual possibility. As the novel continues, she moves easily from the waiting arms of her husband to intimacies with the wives of his business associates to further explorations and experiences in which the subtle aesthetics of eroticism are expounded-and enacted-to their fullest. Emmanuelle, which has sold hundreds of thousands of copies since its initial clandestine publication in France, relates the movement of a woman from an unconscious to a profoundly conscious sexuality.”
